High School Essay Contest
Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Students in 9th through 12th grade from across the county may enter to win cash prizes at the Medina VFW. Winners are then submitted to compete on a regional and then state levels - ultimately in hopes to make it to the national level chance to win larger scholarships.

Patriot's Pen
Grades 6-8 Essay Contest
Students grades 6-8 can enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen annual youth essay contest. The essay contest encourages students to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Entries are due to the Medina VFW by 10/31. Local winners are then submitted to compete on a regional and then state levels - ultimately in hopes to make it to the national level chance to win larger scholarships.
